Learn how to make one of Britain's most ancient beehives, weaving rods of willow into a charming alveary. Course tutor and master skep maker and beekeeper, Chris Park will demonstrate how to work the willow, and make sure you leave with a good grip on the key tips and techniques. Chris will also show how to apply cloom to your new skep, and discuss various recipes to make your own coating mixture. You will have a chance to see some of his expertly crafted skeps, and ask him about the endangered crafts he has been working so hard to revitalise. Bees for Development staff will also be happy to answer questions about their work and about other woven beehives used around the world.

These courses are always also meetings of minds. But if you are able to stay focused enough on the task at hand while being transported by the interesting conversation, then you will finish weaving your alveary by the end of the course. You are welcome to bring a bucket and take it away full of cloom ready to be applied onto your creation. Just make sure not to spill it inside the car on the way back!

The course runs from 9.30am to 4pm at the Yew Tree Inn, Ross-on-Wye. Weather permitting, it will take place outdoors in the garden. A varied and abundant spread of delicious vegetarian dishes will be provided for lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day.

All the material to make your willow alveary will be provided on the day.
